Gastric Balloon
A gastric balloon, also known as an intragastric balloon, is a medical device used to aid in weight loss for individuals who are overweight or obese. It is a temporary, non-surgical intervention that involves placing a deflated balloon in the stomach and then inflating it with a sterile saline solution or gas.
The procedure to insert a gastric balloon typically involves an endoscopic approach, where a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth and into the stomach. The deflated balloon is then inserted into the stomach through the endoscope and filled with the saline solution or gas. Once inflated, the balloon occupies space in the stomach, leading to a feeling of fullness and reduced food intake.
The gastric balloon is usually left in place for a specific period, usually ranging from six months to one year, after which it is removed. During this time, individuals are typically advised to follow a supervised diet and make lifestyle modifications to maximize the benefits of the gastric balloon.
